ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police are searching for a man they say fired a gun at a St. Louis Police officer during a traffic stop Tuesday morning.

The traffic stop occurred around 5:10 a.m. in the 3700 block of Penrose. During the stop, the 34 year-old suspect produced a gun. When the officer saw the weapon, he fired multiple shots at the suspect, who escaped the scene in his vehicle.

The vehicle was later recovered by police in the 4200 block of Clarence. An inquiry would reveal the vehicle was stolen. Police have learned the identity of the suspect, but they have released no other information.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured, police said.

The suspect is been placed as wanted.

The investigation is ongoing.
