FESTUS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A 17-year-old boy is dead after accidentally being shot by his friend Saturday evening.

Festus Police have identified the victim as Zachary DePung.

Around 6:50 p.m., officers responded to 1909 Iditarod Trail for a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the boy had accidentally been shot by another 17-year-old boy.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he received emergency care until he died early in the morning on Sunday.

Officers said the two boys found a hand gun in a nearby park and began playing with it.They eventually returned to the victim’s home where they continued to handle the gun which lead to one of the boys shooting the other.

"We still have to do the background on the gun, trace it back, where it was purchased and just wait for people to call us if they have any information," said Police Chief Tim Lewis of the Festus Police Department.

Police are asking if anyone had a handgun stolen recently in Festus to contact police.

The identity of the shooter has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
