JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

As the total solar eclipse on August 21 draws closer, Amazon is recalling a line of solar eclipse glasses that may not be safe for viewing.

A shop steward for Local 2665, the union that includes Cedar Hill Firefighters, said they ordered about 250 glasses from Amazon to hand out. He said the classes, listed as Homay CE ISO Certified Flexible Paper Solar Eclipse Glasses, stated they were ISO certified, had an ISO stamp, and were mirrored on the outside.

However, Amazon later contacted them warning that it had not received confirmation from the supplier that they sourced the item from a recommended manufacturer, and therefore, Amazon recommended people do not use the product to view the sun or the eclipse.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District urged residents not to use the glasses.

Both NASA and the American Astronomical Society advise people to use solar eclipse glasses from recommended manufacturers. Although these glasses were listed for sale on Amazon, the retailer was not able to confirm that they came from a recommended manufacturer.

Viewing the eclipse without proper protection can cause severe damage to the retina as well as the loss of vision.
