KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A portion of Big Bend Road in Kirkwood is back open on Friday afternoon after the Kirkwood Fire Department hazardous materials team was called to the area.

Around 11:50 a.m. Friday, the road was closed at Geyer after a barrel with unknown contents fell off a truck and into the intersection.

The material was later determined to be an aluminum chloride blend, which the Kirkwood Fire Department says poses no health hazard. The intersection was closed and the nearby Fast Tracks gas station was evacuated as a precaution.

According to the City of Kirkwood, the St. Louis Community College at Meramec was not evacuated, but traffic was not allowed from the campus onto Big Bend Road until the situation was cleared.

The material has since been cleaned up, and both Big Bend and the Big Bend-Geyer intersection are back open.
