ARNOLD, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Firefighters are constantly on the scene of emergencies, but one incident caught the Rock Community Fire Protection District by surprise.

Firefighters were on the scene Wednesday after a drive shaft skid across Interstate 55, struck another vehicle, and then flew into a different vehicle’s windshield.

"It would have ended my life if I wasn't paying attention," said Steve Montgomery, whose truck was hit by the shaft.

Montgomery was driving north on I-55 near Richardson Road when the incident occurred. He said he ducked just before the pipe shot through his window.

"I don't know how he maintained composure, but he did not hit a car on either side of him. He was able to get to the side of the road," said Maggie Rothney who was driving the car behind Montgomery.

Montgomery's car lost its transmission but he was not injured.
