The Cardinals have activated Adam Wainwright from the disabled list for Sunday’s start in Cincinnati. Swapping spots with Wainwright, Kevin Siegrist lands on the 10-day DL for the second time on the year, this time with left forearm tendinitis, according to a release from the club.
Though Wainwright has compiled a strong 11-5 record for the season, he entered Sunday’s start with a career-worst full season ERA of 4.89. He struggled to begin the outing, needing 45 pitches to finish the first inning and allowing six consecutive Reds to reach base in the first inning before recording an out.
Siegrist has had a similarly frustrating campaign, dealing with multiple injuries as he’s navigated 34.1 innings with a 4.98 ERA. It was a cervical spine sprain that put Siegrist on the shelf back in June, and soreness in his pitching arm is the culprit this time.
Even after Siegrist’s trip to the DL, the Cardinals still maintain an eight-man bullpen after Sam Tuivailala was promoted to St. Louis earlier in the week.
