WEST ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

A letter asking people to donate to help volunteer firefighters is raising red flags.

The Volunteer Firefighter Alliance out of Knoxville, Tennessee aims to help volunteer fire departments nationwide. Recently, letters from the group asking for donations began showing up in mail boxes in West County.

“I don’t appreciate people trying to solicit funds to something that is not going to be directly related to the fire service or law enforcement,” said resident Jim Silvernail, who received the letter in the mail.

Silvernail lives within the Metro West Fire District, which is not a volunteer department. All of the revenue for the fire district comes from taxpayer money.

The Metro West Fire District recently took to Facebook to warn residents about the mailer. Local fire departments in other parts of the country are also issuing similar warnings.

News 4 reached out to the Volunteer Fire Alliance for comment, but have yet to hear back.
