ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

St. Louis area hotels are booking up fast with out-of-towners planning to travel to the area to see the solar eclipse on August 21. So many are turning to local homeowners who are renting out their house, a spare bedroom or a couch.

"So I've had quite a few people inquire on couch surfing about staying here for the eclipse," said Tim Galos.

Galos regularly rents out a spare bedroom through the website, Airbnb, but said he planned to rent out a couple of couches for the eclipse instead. He said the rate for one night will only be $34.

News 4 checked Airbnb to see what type of accommodations are available on the Sunday night before the eclipse and found a 2-bedroom house in north St. Louis for $55, a loft in Soulard for $255 and a 5-bedroom house in south St. Louis for $700.

"I think a lot of people in large group that are traveling they just want to be together. They don't want to stay in hotels or separate houses, they just want to stay together," said Emily Leonard.

Leonard said she and her husband started renting out their house through Airbnb about nine months ago. She said they use an online service called, 'Beyond Pricing,' that helps set the daily rate for their house based on the rates of other short term rentals in the market. And the service doubled the rental price just as many local hotels have done.

"That's the highest I've ever seen it jump and right now it's about 75 per person per night for the eclipse night," said Leonard.

The highest asking price for a one-night rental in the region is a 3-bedroom home near Murphysboro, in southern Illinois, listed at  $6,000.
