VINITA PARK, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A former part-time Vinita Terrace employee is accused of inflating accrued sick time to get more money from the city.

Deborah Klein was a court clerk for the City of Vinita Terrace when voters approved the city’s merger with Vinita Park in November 2016. Leading up to the May 8, 2017 merger, Vinita Terrace announced they would pay employees for unused sick time that had accrued at the time of the dissolution of Vinita Terrace.

Klein was given a check in excess of $6,000 after reporting she had 372 hours of unused sick time, according to court documents.

Officials reportedly investigated her sick time and discovered she had used it all up by October 2015, and that she would begin accruing additional sick time at the beginning of March 2016. Klein allegedly kept track of her sick time on a city computer and, on her last day, asked an IT employee to erase all court and personnel files. When the employee asked the 61-year-old if she wanted the files backed up she told him no. Printed records of Klein’s sick time were also reportedly missing.

Klein was arrested in late July and refused to make a statement, according to court documents.  She has been charged with stealing $750 or more, a class D felony.
