WENTZVILLE (KMOV.com) – A Wentzville man is charged with arson and property damage after police say he set his home on fire with other people inside.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, police say Benjamin Gunnett, 40, lit the garage of his home on Stone Run Blvd on fire. He later told investigators he “set the house on fire to save everyone.”

According to court documents, Gunnett called police Saturday night to report suspicious activity, saying someone was shining light sin his window.  Wentzville police checked the area but found nothing.

“I saw a lot of police officers but didn’t think anything of it,” said neighbor Rodney Tucker. “I went inside and maybe thirty minutes later hear sirens and saw the flames out the window.”

Police say Gunnett lit the garage fire, his roommate heard someone yell fire, getting his child and girlfriend out safely.

Witnesses say Gunnett was seen running down the street, he was apprehended by police. Court documents say he told police, “God was going to set him free. While at the hospital Gunnett was yelling and screaming random names.”

Gunnet suffered burn marks to his arm but no one else was injured. The house was severely damaged. The house next door was also damaged.
