Prop P money in Chesterfield may not go to police

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Chesterfield's mayor says money from Prop P, approved this year by St. Louis County voters, may end up not going to benefit his police department.

Mayor Bob Nation says Chesterfield's Police are already among the highest paid in the area and using the extra $2.3 million "just doesn't seem to be a responsible use of taxpayer dollars."

The Prop P campaign touted the sales tax hike as a way to boost police departments in St. Louis County.  But the wording of the proposition seems to leave cities open to spending the money any way they wish.

Nation says any decision on how to spend the money will be up to the Chesterfield City Council.  He also says other cities receiving the sales hike revenue may also look at other ways to spend the money.
