EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man died at the hospital after an apartment building caught fire in East St. Louis early Wednesday morning.

Just after 2 a.m., a couch caught on fire on the fourth floor of the Orr-Weathers Apartment building at 14th and Missouri, according to fire officials.

Arthur Jefferson was taken to the hospital with critical injuries sustained in the fire. He was pronounced dead just before 3:45 a.m., according to officials. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the 60-year-old’s official cause of death.

After the fire broke out, two other people were listed in fair condition and a firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, according to fire officials.

The apartment building houses a number of elderly and disabled people, according to Fire Chief Jason Blackmon. A nearby community center will be open to house the residents while fire crews are on the scene.

The majority of the residents living in the building were able to go back inside before 7 a.m. The Red Cross is assisting those who remain displaced by the fire.

The reason the couch caught on fire is currently under investigation.
