ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

It's been three months since former St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson resigned, and the search for his replacement carries on.

Currently, Lt. Colonel Lawrence O'Toole is serving as the interim police chief.

But the city took a big step in finding his replacement: formally requesting to hire an executive search firm. The city said their hope for the private company would be to "identify and recruit a diverse group of highly qualified candidates."

The city expects to pay $50,000--$75,000 for a search firm's services in finding the new head of their police department.

A member from the citizen advisory committee said they heard from residents who were on-board with using a search firm. Granted the search firm would help find someone who would be a right fit for the job.

Preferences would be given to firms with minority and female employees, including management. The city would also prefer a firm that is geographically close to St. Louis, among other preferences.

Firms have until Aug. 7 to submit their bids for contract.
