WATERLOO (KMOV.com) -

Children who are dealing with the pain and discomfort of cancer are enjoying a chance to just be kids this week at Camp His Kids.

The week-long summer camp began on Monday in Waterloo where boys and girls take part in usual camp games and challenges.

The camp is in its 30th year. The goal is to let the kids share the camping experience with others who understand what they are going through.

Former camper and cancer survivor Joey Renick is now a counselor at the camp.

“I really just hope kids can see you push through your treatments and want to be role models and give them hope,” he said.

Campers at Camp His Kids pay nothing. Directors said they could use some help with finances this year.
