ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man who attempted to put out a garage fire was found dead by firefighters in St. Clair County Monday morning.

According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, a 17-year-old woke up, smelled smoke and saw the fire burning in the garage of the home in the 2560 block of State Route 13 around 3:15 a.m.

The teenager alerted the home’s other residents, a 47-year-old woman, 46-year-old man and 69-year-old man, who were able to exit the home.

After getting outside of the home, the 46-year-old man re-entered the garage and attempted to put the fire out, according to the sheriff's department. While he was in the garage, there was reportedly a large burst of flames, which trapped the man inside.

A deceased man was later found inside the garage. Police said they believe the man is the 46-year-old resident. Authorities have not released the man’s identity.

The cause of the fire is under the investigation.
