EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) - -

Thousands of families in East St. Louis are a step ahead of back to school shopping.

More than 100 area churches came together to provide dozens of free services to people in the area Saturday morning.

“They are giving out clothes, shoes, groceries,” said mother Kenya Stanley. “I guess it’s going to be a good experience for the kids.”

Stanley was at the event getting her children ready for a new school year.

“Sometimes you just can’t afford all the things you need to get, school is very demanding, supplies do help out families,” said Lisa Woods, Stanley’s mother.

The event, put together by faith based organization Convey of Hope, helps families get the supplies they need.

“If you can provide hope for people, let people care, and we can provide tangible help for the community agencies, community services,” said Jason Bachman, outreach director for Convey of Hope.

Bachman said they expected to serve more than 5,000 people. Guests left with things like children’s shoes, backpacks, notebooks and even groceries.

“A lot of the money came from a lot of churches, businesses, individuals that really made this happen,” said Bachman.

Stanley said it is help that many families are thankful to get.

“It’s very important because they need it to do their school work,” she said.
