AFFTON (KMOV.com) -

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger joined firefighters with the Affton Fire Protection District to check on elderly residents in the Affton area Thursday afternoon during the immense heat.

Firefighters said they have come to know a number of seniors who live in their community over the years and they always check on them when the weather becomes extreme.

Bill Davis was one of the seniors who was paid a visit.

"I think they're fantastic, you can't beat our fire department," said Davis.

Stenger said the extreme heat can be a matter of life and death for a senior or someone with a chronic illness if they don't have air conditioning.

"So checking in on them physically is extremely important," said Stenger.

Earlier in the day the St. Louis Health Department sent 14 teams of workers across the city to check on some of the city's most vulnerable residents.

"I like the fact they're checking on me," said Laddie Roebuck.

Roebuck is one of 6,500 people in a database that were called on Monday after the first excessive heat warning. Those who couldn't be reach were visited in person to make sure they have adequate air conditioning and are doing okay.

Roebuck says he needs help getting a better air conditioner.

"Where I done moved to now has got air conditioning but just works a little bit. I've got a little bitty fan and I sweat a lot. I've got a lot of health problems.
