For generations, the tree-lined roadway leading up to Brookings Hall on the Washington University Campus was the image that came to mind when people thought of the university.

However, a new construction project has changed the iconic scenery.

"The steps that build up to the arches of Brookings have always been that icon for 115 years, but the foreground was not an attractive foreground. It was trucks, busses, service vehicles and parking lots," said James Kolker of Washington University.

The eastern end of the campus is undergoing a $360 million project covering 18 acres.

The project will add several new academic halls to the campus along with an underground parking garage.

Washington University says more than three-quarters of the pin oaks that had to come down were in poor or critical shape and reaching the end of their life expectancy.

Hundreds of new trees will be planted when the area is landscaped.

"What the new plan will do is replace it with a variety of tree species with a wider opening to improve view of Brookings over the years," said Kolker.

The project will be completed in two phases but most of the work should be complete by the spring of 2019.
