ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A 31-year-old knife-wielding man is in custody after locking himself in a St. Charles bathroom overnight, according to the St. Charles Police Department.

St. Charles Police Officers spotted Gary Shelton, whom they knew had a felony warrant, leaving the QuikTrip at 225 North Kingshighway around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. When the officers approached the suspect, Shelton pulled a knife out from his front pocket, police said.

Officers demanded the suspect to drop the knife but Shelton reportedly refused and went back into the store, at which time officers deployed their tasers, which had no effect. Shelton then barricaded himself in the men’s bathroom.

After barricading himself in the bathroom, the store was evacuated and a perimeter was established by the officers to secure the building. While officers attempted to negotiate with Shelton to release the knife, he refused and made statements indicating “the only way this was going to end was with his death,” according to police.

St. Charles Regional SWAT was called to assist and negotiators were able to talk with Shelton. During the negotiations the bathroom door was slightly open and, after multiple attempts to get the suspect to exit the bathroom, pepper ball rounds were deployed by SWAT members. The suspect still refused to exit the bathroom and instead locked the door. Officials said they then deployed another round of pepper balls under the bathroom door.

Around 1 a.m., Shelton exited the bathroom, threw the knife down and was taken into custody, police said.

No officers were injured.
