ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Just after getting two pieces back from the disabled list, the Cardinals lose another bat to injury.
Randal Grichuk was placed on the DL with a back strain and the team recalled Jose Martinez to take his place.
It’s unclear how Grichuk injured himself during the All Star break, but he has injured his back in the weight room before.
The 25-year-old was sent down to Single-A to work on his plate discipline and rejoined the big club in late June. Over the final five days of the month, Grichuk hit .259 with three home runs and nine RBI.
But he struggled in July, going 4-for-29. Half of those hits are home runs, but his .194 OBP is disheartening given the assigned curriculum during his demotion.
Martinez was optioned on July 6, but returns to the big leagues carrying a .280 average with five homers. He’ll act as the fourth outfielder, spelling Tommy Pham in left and Stephen Piscotty in right.
