HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Firefighters said a dog died and a woman was left in critical condition after a fire broke out in Hazelwood Thursday.

Fire Chief Dave Herman said fire crews received a call about the fire around 8:00 am. When a crew arrived, the single family home was engulfed in flames and smoke.

Authorities said a husband pulled his wife from the house and onto the front patio. When firefighters arrived they moved her to the front lawn and provided medical attention.

Herman said the woman was barely breathing from smoke inhalation and was suffering from burns.

The woman was rushed to an emergency room and is currently in critical condition.

Her husband was not hurt, according to the fire chief. Crews rescued two dogs, which were both rescue dogs.

Fire crews said one of the dogs did not survive and the other dog received medical treatment on the lawn and is at a local animal hospital, in good condition.

Authorities said the fire started at the back of the house and they believe it was accidental.

The fire is still being investigated.
