ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Missouri State Treasurer Eric Schmitt has a blunt message for Missouri lawmakers: “Don’t be like Illinois.”

He shared the message in an open letter to the Missouri General Assembly and at a press conference Tuesday morning.

“The past two months have been a tale of two states. On that side of the river, they are raising taxes, getting credit downgrades, and losing business. On this side of the river, tax relief is on the way, our budget is balanced, and our fiscal house is in order,” said Schmitt.

He said the Illinois budget crisis did not happen overnight and he gave lawmakers a to-do list to make sure it doesn’t happen in Missouri. First, he said, they need to address the looming pension crisis. He estimates the system is only 50 percent funded.

He also asked them to protect the state’s AAA credit rating, shrink the size of government, and provide more tax relief to both families and businesses.
