Excessive Heat Warning Continues for St. Louis area through This Evening

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOV.COM) - Dangerous heat will continue through this evening for most of the area.

Excessive Heat Warning Through Sunday Evening: Most of the News 4 viewing area with the exception of Pike, Greene, Macoupin, Montgomery and Fayette Counties. Heat index readings in these areas will range from 100-105.

We set a new record high of 108 degrees Saturday.  The old record was 107 set in 1901. We have now hit triple digits 7 times this summer. While just a bit cooler today, it appears that much of the area will continue to deal with dangerous heat, especially areas along and south of I-70.

A cold front will give us a chance of storms again late Sunday afternoon and evening but they should only be isolated. Much of Sunday looks dry and partly cloudy. Current high temperature forecast is for 97 with a heat index near 100 to 105.

Continue to take all precautions to protect yourselves from overexposure. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Limit exercise to the coolest parts of the day.  Keep in mind that the effects of heat are cumulative.

Also think of animals during this dangerous heat. Limit your pet's exposure, too!

If it's pets or kids....no amount of time left alone inside a vehicle is safe this time of year. Even with windows cracked in the shade, the temperature inside the car can jump up 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.
