NORTH ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A group of local teens spent the day working under the hot sun on Saturday in an effort to help improve their north St. Louis neighborhood.

They were out maintaining a community garden they made in a vacant lot on Enright Avenue near Sarah Street.

The cleanup effort is all part of a youth development program through a nonprofit program called “Love the Lou.”

From growing vegetables to raising chickens, the organization hopes to help teach the teens about responsibility.

“In a lot of ways for me, the gardens are actually a metaphor for their lives, where we’re planting these seeds and we’re actually seeing fruit from them,” said Lucas Rouggly, executive director of Love the Lou. “The fruit is their lives and I couldn’t be more proud of this crop of kids.”

The group will meet to work on the garden again on July 22 at 9:00 a.m.
