NORTH ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

An event was held in north St. Louis Saturday afternoon in an effort to promote positive opportunists for young people.

"Rock the Community" is an event for kids and by kids.

Several performances rocked the stage including kid rappers, dancers and singers. One performance was two self-taught dancers, Prince Hakim and Evonte Gray, from North St. Louis. They believe dancing kept them on a successful track so far in life and they hope by performing in this event, they encourage this kids to do the same. "It kept me from doing bad things. I can take my energy out on dance. Anything that frustrates me, I go straight to dance and it keeps me in a positive mindset," said Hakim.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner was in attendance at the event and said she hopes to be a role model for young people in the community.

"I'm part of this community and to support these young people, to give them positive role model to aspire to, to say that we come from North City, South City, wherever and we're doing positive things," Gardner said. "So it's to show people that we hear about the negatives all the time, but let's highlight the positives and that's why I'm here."

By meeting people at events like this one, she hopes to build trust with the city , which she believes can ultimately help solve more crimes. "So people feel comfortable coming forward when the most serious incident takes place," said Gardner.

The city of St. Louis donated 400 sandwiches to the event so every kid was able to eat for free.
