SULLIVAN, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Sullivan police arrested a 30-year old assistant coach during a Sullivan Boys Baseball Association game at Jim Bottomley Park on June 28 after identifying him as a registered sex offender.

Sex offenders are forbidden by state law from visiting parks or coaching athletic teams involving children under 17-years-old.

Parents of boys on the team confirmed that the assistant coach is 30-year old Chris Respress. Respress is listed on the Missouri State Highway Patrol sex registry, which shows he was convicted in 2009 in Illinois for the sexual exploitation of a 14-year-old girl

Respress was released pending application for warrants but according to Sullivan Police, he was arrested four hours later for playing basketball in a park with three other people, one of them a minor.

Sullivan Boys Baseball Association board member Danny Fallowfield said the league checks the background of head coaches but not assistant coaches.

The league released a statement that said in part:

"We'd like to assure the public, our head coach and others involved with the team were not aware of Mr. Respress' past convictions."

"In effort to ensure this will never happen again, the league board members are in a deep discussion regarding the recent incident and are working on a few best practices to implement going forward as it relates to screening volunteers."

Since his arrest, law enforcement sources tell News 4 that Respress moved to Rolla. The state sex offender registry shows he registered July 5 in Phelps County.
