MONROE COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The Illinois State Police Department is investigating after a suspect was shot and killed by a Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Wednesday night.

According to the sheriff’s department, the deputy was called to a home in the 1520 block of Mill Street in Maeystown around 9 p.m. after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance.

Shortly after arriving at the home, the deputy asked for assistance. Sometime after asking for assistance, the deputy shot and killed the man, identified Thursday as 53-year-old Edwin J. Esker.

Sheriff’s officials have not said what prompted the deputy the fire his gun. It is unknown if Esker was armed at the time.
