ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

A plastic container falling from a truck is the cause of the 8-vehicle accident that shut down the highway Friday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a truck was carrying a container in the back of it's bed while driving on westbound Interstate 70. When the container fell from the bed, other vehicles swerved to avoid it, causing a chain reaction and eventually the accident.

Around noon, the multi-vehicle accident had shut down all lanes of westbound I-70.

The closure was originally expected to last for an hour, ending some time around 1:00 p.m. But after 1:00 p.m., the highway opened one lane.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said there were eight vehicles involved in the accident.
