NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

Nearly one year into her tenure, Hazelwood School District Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart spoke to News 4 about her goals and the issues facing the district since she took over.

Collins-Hart arrived at a time when the district’s budget deficit was at the forefront. She said that the issue has been put to rest.

“Balancing of the budget was a process. We didn’t just balance this year. I would say I was fortunate I came in at a time where we were close to balancing the budget,” said Collins-Hart.

During that time, big crowds were turning out to oppose massive budget cut proposals. For the first time in about five years, the district will operate under a balanced budget.

“We’re still pretty fragile, but we did have to make some tough decisions this year,” said Collins-Hart.

The district eliminated 30 teaching and six administrative positions as part of an effort to balance the budget. The district is still facing a state audit after parents petitioned the State of Missouri to step in and examine what they called budget mishaps. Many of the parents have accused the district of spending money on administrators instead of students.

Collins-Hart says she welcomes the audit.

“I think that will be a very good premise for them to look at. I think when we do comparisons, we’ll see something very different. That’s the advantage of having the audit,” said Collins-Hart.
