FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A Fairview Heights daycare employee was arrested on Tuesday for alleged child abuse.

On June 22, Fairview Heights Police responded to a report of two children under the age of three being physically abused at their daycare facility.

Joann R. Schofield, 51, of Belleville is accused of picking up the children's sleeping cots and dropping the kids to the floor.  As a result, both children were taken to local hospitals.  One was treated for minor injuries, and the other sustained no injury.

Schofield allegedly did this on two separate occasions, once on June 16 and again on June 22.

On Monday, Schofield was taken into police custody, and on Tuesday a warrant was issued charging her with one felony count of aggravated battery and one count of misdemeanor battery for the harm she caused to both toddlers, police said.

Schofield's bond is set at $50,000.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services have been notified and are conducting an investigation.
