ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Better Business Bureau is advising consumers to use caution when deciding whether to contribute money to the Center for American Homeless Veterans.

The high fundraising costs and potentially misleading information is a concern of the BBB for potential donors.

A Quincy, Ill. woman told BBB a fundraiser for the organization contacted her recently and led her to believe her donation would be used to provide direct assistance to homeless military veterans.

Instead, it appears that more than 95 percent of the donations are used to pay the fundraising firms, salaries for the president, other employees, and other expenses related to the charity’s office.

The BBB said the Quincy woman initially told a telemarketer she would donate $20 to Center for American Homeless Veterans but changed her mind after she learned only $2 of her donation would go to the organization.

The Virginia nonprofit organization has collected nearly $5 million on the behalf of homeless veterans between 2014 and 0216, according to the BBB.

The founder and president of the organization Brian A. Hampton identifies himself as a Vietnam veteran and retired Army major.

“The high fundraising costs and questionable solicitations are significant issues, said Michelle Corey, St. Louis BBB president and CEO.

The BBB says the organization also uses the name Association for Homeless and Disabled Veterans.
