ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A 25-year old man from St. Charles was arrested in Jefferson County after an attempted armed robbery at Fireworks City near Old Sugar Creek Road and Highway 30 around 5 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, the man crawled into the tent before the business opened and pulled a gun on a security guard.

Authorities said the guard was able to wrestle the gun away from the suspect and detain the man till deputies arrived.

Fireworks stand operators told News 4 that security is a big part of running their businesses. Jeff Taylor with Fireworks City said, "It's always in the back of your mind that you could be robbed."

Most stands keep someone at the business 24 hours a day. Others also use security cameras, alarms, fences, and gates. Some stand operators will stay in a camping trailer on the property the full 20 days that the business is open.

Some thieves may think fireworks stands are easy targets because most are in tents and not a building of brick and mortar. So stand operators told News 4 that they have to take the steps necessary to protect their businesses from thieves.

Jamie Costello of Springdale Fireworks said, "They like fireworks just like the rest of us, they don't want to pay for their fireworks unlike the rest of us."
