JENNINGS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A citizen fatally shot a man he believed to be tampering with a vehicle in Jennings early Tuesday morning.

St. Louis County Police were called to Switzer near Hamilton around 4 a.m. after receiving a report of a person tampering with a vehicle. When officers arrived, they found 53-year-old Tommie Tyler lying in the street with two gunshot wounds.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital,Tyler was pronounced dead.

The police investigation revealed a citizen living the area shot the man. The citizen, 53, is cooperating with authorities. He was taken into custody, but is not being held or charged, pending additional investigation. According to investigators, the incident occurred when the citizen confronted Tyler outside after noticing he was possibly tampering with vehicles and acting suspicious. Police do not believe the two men knew each other. Police say Tyler was unarmed.

Neighbors in the area say they are shocked by what occurred.

" It was kind of like, people everywhere, there was a body laying on the ground, they had everything taped off and it was frightening because we all live here and this has never happened before," said LaQuanta Nichols.
