Sheriff's Office launches investigation after inmate dies in jail

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

An inmate has died in custody, and now the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of his death. 

Michael Abboud, 36, the evening of March 18 inside the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office jail. Abboud's fellow inmates alerted a Corrections Officer of Abboud. The officer and other medical staff on scene tended to Abboud before he was transported to a hospital. 

The inmate was later taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. 

The sheriff's Office said the investigation of Abboud's death was launched Saturday evening immediately following the incident. A review of the surveillance film, the sheriff's office said, revealed Abboud did not suffer any trauma before his death. 

His body is being examined by the medical examiner  of St. Louis County, but the results of that examination could takes weeks. 

Abboud was originally being held in custody on the charges of Tampering with a Motor Vehicle and Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Abboud also had pending cases for First Degree Burglary, Tampering with a Motor Vehicle, and Resisting Arrest. 

His bond was set for $50,000.
