MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

The paramedic who saved the life of a 3-month-old infant who nearly drowned in a Metro East lake is being hailed a hero.

Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, authorities received a call about a car with headlights on driving into Silver Lake in Madison County.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found a 3-month-old baby inside the car as it was submerging.

The Madison County Sheriff said paramedic Todd Zobrist with Highland EMS jumped in the water and found the infant inside the car. He then placed her on the car’s roof, which was still above water, and took her to shore. He then performed CPR on the 3-month-old on the scene, and inside the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

"He was able to grab the child by a limb and get the child to the roof of the vehicle where he started CPR," Sheriff John Lakin said, who added Zobrist is "a hero."

Authorities say the 3-month-old is expected to be okay and will be released from a St. Louis hospital Friday.

Police say documents tie the submerged car to a fatal house fire that broke out in Glen Carbon only minutes before.

It’s been a rough few weeks for those who help abandoned, neglected or lost animals. Earlier this month there were two separate incidents in which SUVs were stolen from those trying to help animals and just last Friday, a truck belonging to Stray Rescue was stolen.
