ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The parents of a 12-year-old child that was shot and killed in south St. Louis Tuesday night are facing charges.

Yolanda Jackson, 40, and Donnie Holmes, 41, are charged with endangering the welfare of a child and involuntary manslaughter. Holes is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

According to police, Damien Holmes, 12, and a 9-year-old boy were home alone in the 3300 block of Michigan just before 11 p.m. when they found a gun and began playing with it, police said. While they were playing with the gun, it discharged, striking Holmes in the head.

Holmes' father Donnie came home and took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Early Wednesday morning, police said homicide detectives and the child abuse unit were investigating, which is standard protocol. They also said the incident is an “accidental shooting.”

Police say there were substances inside the home including cocaine base, amphetamine, tramadol and marijuana.

Dave Harger lives next door to the where Holmes lived. He says it may not have been the first time the boys were left home alone.

"We would see the parents leave and stuff at the same time and no one else came over there," he says.

This is the second time in a month a child has died from playing with a gun in the city of Saint Louis. The mother of a 6 year old girl who was found shot and killed, along with that mother's boyfriend are facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

Police say 32-year-old Jeramee Rayme and 28-year-old Ebony Jones smoked narcotics and fell asleep in their north Saint Louis home. Police say they left a loaded gun on the floor and the the girl was then shot by another child in the house.

"It [guns] needs to be either put up high enough where they can't get it, or put a lock on it or leave it unloaded. Period," says Harger.

The investigation is ongoing in the Holmes case.
