COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

The Collinsville Police Department got a gift on Monday that it’s not intended to keep.

Judy Zimmerman is with the American Legion Auxiliary and donated as many Socks of Love as the department wanted.

They’re a pair of socks stuffed with personal care items such as soap, shampoo and a toothbrush that officers can give out to the homeless.

“A lot of homeless don’t want to talk to police officers out of fear, but this opens the door for police to be able to communicate more often with them,” said Zimmerman.

Zimmerman said the American Legion Auxiliary had a big meeting over the weekend in Springfield, Illinois, where hundreds of volunteers helped to stuff 856 Socks of Love.

Then they were passed out to police departments across the entire state of Illinois.

Collinsville police said they are putting them in all of their police cars and keeping some at the station.

They’re grateful to be able to give out another person’s kind deed to someone in need.

“I think it could change their whole day from a kind of rotten day to a pretty fantastic day,” said Lt. Gary Scaggs.

Zimmerman said they plan on making more Socks of Love and told the department to call if they run out.
