JUPITER, Fl. (KMOV.com) -- Mike Matheny missed Saturday’s action at the team’s Jupiter complex, bowing out in the early morning due to illness.
The manager initially thought he would be able to get through the day, but before a coaches meeting, he began feeling worse and went home for the day. Bench coach David Bell stood in as manager. Matheny is expected back Sunday for the game against the Marlins.
Aledmys Diaz has been out of action for a few days due to cramping in his hamstring. The shortstop has been taking things slow to avoid any further injury, but is expected to be back in games within a day or so.
“He’s real close. He took ground balls today at game speed out on the back fields today,” Bell said, emphasizing the team’s spring philosophy of taking extra time for recovery while they have it. “He had a little cramping, but if this were the season he could be playing by now.”
Luke Weaver will return to the mound Sunday against the Marlins. The 23-year-old righty has been out since March 1 with back spasms, exiting his second outing of spring after recording two outs.
He will have to build back up to multiple-inning work, but should have no trouble being ready for the season.
John Gant, acquired from Atlanta in the Jaime Garcia trade, threw three perfect innings against his former team Saturday. The lefty is expected to begin the season in the Triple-A rotation, but continues to impress in spring camp.
“He’s really opening some eyes,” Bell said. “He’s putting himself in a position where we are taking a close look at him.”
