NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

A suspect sustained non-life threatening injuries after being shot by a St. Louis City officer overnight.

According to Police Chief Sam Dotson, officers were investigating a robbery where a cell phone was taken when they found three suspects matching the description in the area of Interstate 270 and New Halls Ferry Road around 1 a.m.

Friday night around 9:30 p.m. police were called to a report of an armed robbery in the 2000 block of South Ninth St. Police said that during the robbery a cell phone was taken.

"The victims were able to provide us with a description of not only the suspects, but also the vehicle they were driving and described it as a black Ford Fusion," said Dotson.

Officers from the St. Louis Anti-Crime Unit were able to track down the stolen cell phone and locate the vehicle in the area of Interstate 270 and New Halls Ferry in St. Louis County.

When officers spotted the suspects, they were seen leaving one vehicle and entering another that was previously reported stolen from St. Louis County.

"As they're calling for air support, as they're preparing for a helicopter, as they prepare to stop this vehicle, individuals get out of that vehicle and transfer into an Infinity," Chief Dotson said.

Dotson said the vehicle the suspects were seen entering was taken in a carjacking in the end of February.

Officers then deployed spike stripes, which deflated the tires of the suspects’ vehicle. The three suspects then ran from the vehicle, where two were immediately taken into custody.

The third suspect, described as being 24 years old, ran from officers. While he was running, an officer attempted to use a taser, which had no effect on the suspect because of the cold weather and the suspect’s layer of clothing, according to Chief Dotson.

Chief Dotson said the suspect then turned and pointed a gun at an officer, who fired one shot, striking the suspect in the lower body.

"An individual that's been arrested by law enforcement, that's on probation, was still able to get a firearm and point it at a police officer," Chief Dotson said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 33-year-old officer who fired the shot at the suspect is described as a nine-year veteran of the department.

Chief Dotson described the injured suspect as a convicted felon who had been previously arrested by law enforcement and was on probation.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Since the shooting occurred in St. Louis County, Chief Dotson said county police are conducting the investigation.

The three suspects have been identified as 24-year-old Daryl Greer, 21-year-old Matthew Smith and 18-year-old Deviaughn Brett.

Greer has been charged with one count of: First-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony and possession of a defaced firearm. Greer is being held on a $200,000 cash-only bond.

Smith has been charged with one count of resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony and one count of tampering with a motor vehicle in the second degree. He is being held on a $75,000 cash-only bond.

Brett has been charged with one count of tampering with a motor vehicle in the second degree and is being held on a $15,000 cash-only bond.
