ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Storms left thousands without power in the St. Louis area overnight Monday into Tuesday.

As of 6:30 a.m., around 4,000 people were without power in Madison, Macoupin, Jersey and Montgomery Counties. Most of those outages are in Madison County.

Around 8,000 people are without power in the portion of the News 4 viewing area that is in Missouri.

At one point overnight, Ameren reported about 30,000 people were without power throughout the area.

Tuesday morning, Ameren Illinois said their Emergency Operations Center was activated and field crews were assessing damage and making repairs. Ameren officials said their early assessments indicate 48 sub-transmission and 68 distribution poles were down across the service area.

"As the sun comes up and our crews can see the full extent of the damages, they will continue to focus on repairing large transmission lines, followed by the distribution lines and feeder circuits that bring power to neighborhoods and customer premises," said Ron Pate, senior vice president of Operations and Technical Services for Ameren Illinois. "All of our customers can be assured that we are working to bring everyone back on as quickly as possible.  But with the widespread damages and reports of downed wires, we will ensure that we're doing this work safely.”

The company also advises everyone to stay away from downed power lines and to report downed lines, natural gas odor or outages by calling 1-800-755-5000.
