Man arrested after dog stabbed multiple times, strangled

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Fifty-five-year-old Craig Smith Sr. was arrested Friday in connection with an investigation after a dog was stabbed multiple times in Belleville.

Around 8:18 a.m. on Monday, police found the dog dead in a wooded area near the 400 block of Catawba Ave.

Police said the dog was a pit bull, or pit bull mix, with several injuries. They said the dog appeared to have numerous stab wounds and evidence of being strangled.

The dog did not have a collar or a microchip.

Police describe the dog as a female pit bull, or pit bull mix, black in color with white spots under her chin, stomach area, and paws. According to police, the dog was well fed and taken care of and its nails were painted pink and yellow.

Smith has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a class four felony. His bond was set at $75,000.
