ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A former employee filed a lawsuit this week against St. Louis City Treasurer Tishaura Jones, claiming he was fired from his job because of “political retaliation.”

Jones is a candidate for mayor.

The lawsuit says Donald Gage was employed in a non-policy making position responsible for the transportation of jurors from the parking garage in the Civil Courts Building, up until his termination on April 4, 2016.

The suit claims that he was terminated because he was running for committeeman in the 26th Ward. Jones ran for and lost the position of 26th Ward Committeewoman last year.

The suit, filed January 27, 2017 claims Jones violated his constitutional rights.

A spokesperson for Jones said Wednesday: “We do not comment on pending litigation or personnel matters.

Gage’s attorney Jerryl Christmas says he intended to file the lawsuit before the mayoral primary because he says voters have the right to know about the allegations before they go to the polls.

Another mayor candidate, Alderman Antonio French, has faced two lawsuits in recent weeks stemming from contracts at his non-profit organization. French told News 4 they were “political grandstanding.”

10 other candidates are running for mayor.
