MONROE COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a telephone scam.

The department said the scammer called a grandparent in the county and said that their grandchild was under arrest in St. Louis. The caller then said the grandparent needed to meet them and post a $4,500 bond.

“We want to remind our residents that law enforcement officials do not ask individuals to meet privately to post bond for people they have arrested. Typically bond is posted at the police department or the sheriff’s department,” read a portion of the department’s Facebook post warning of the scam.

According to the sheriff’s department, the call was made from a private phone number.
