PERRY COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - One person died when a tornado touched down near Perryville, Missouri Tuesday night.

The tornado touched down around 8:00 p.m.

Authorities in Perry County, Mo. said there were vehicles blown off I-55 and damages to houses along Highway 51.

A stretch of both Interstate 55 and Highway 61 was closed because of downed power lines and other debris. Cars were also picked up and thrown across I-55, authorities said. One man, 24-year-old Travis Koenig, of Perryville, was killed on I-55.

Firefighters from several counties were called in to help with search and rescue.

The Red Cross has also set up a shelter in Perryville that will provide a place to stay and hot meals for people affected by the tornado. According to officials Wednesday morning, 10 people were injured during the storm, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens issued a statement about the damage:

Tough and tragic news tonight out of Perryville where there are confirmed reports of a tornado touching down. Our thoughts and prayers are with the community and those affected. State Emergency Management was monitoring severe weather in the region and was prepared to respond to any situation. We have already deployed strike teams and resources, and this community should know that the full weight and support of the state of Missouri is behind you.

I would urge continued caution throughout the night. There is a tornado watch in effect until 4 AM for the following counties: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Perry, Ripley, Scott, Stoddard, and Wayne. If you or a loved one live in these counties, please be alert, vigilant, and safe tonight.

We will continue to work with public safety officials throughout the night, and we will update everyone as additional information comes in. Please keep the people affected by this storm in your prayers tonight.

Due to the damage from the storm and tornado, school in the Perry County School District 32 was canceled for Wednesday.
