A longtime volunteer at the Museum of Transportation died while trying to inflate a new tire Thursday.

Eric Heselbarth was working to restore a 1937 delivery vehicle. When he inflated the tire with air, an apparent overflow caused the inner tube of the tire to break.

Darryl Ross, the President of the Board for the Transport Museum Association, said part of the wheel popped off, and struck Heselbarth in the head. The force of the wheel piece knocked him backwards, where he hit the back of his head.

Heselbarth was transported to the hospital, where he later died hours later.

Heselbarth was 70.
