SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

An officer-involved shooting at California and Osage in south St. Louis is raising a lot of questions for the family of the man killed.

“My dad only lived for his grand kids. He wasn't involved in none of this stuff they say he was involved in,” said Sherrie Torrence.

A memorial is now outside the front door of Don Clark's home. His niece said the neighborhood had a special name for her uncle.

“Pops. He's pops, he's like a grandfather, he's pops,” said Kyarra Couch.

But, what many in his neighborhood and family didn't know was that Clark's home was one of three targets in a six-month investigation by the St. Louis Police Department into illegal drugs and guns.

Tuesday night, three search warrants were served at the homes on California, including Clark's.

“I am getting a phone call from a family member telling me I need to hurry up and get on the south side, the police gone and shot my dad,” said Clark's son, Don Clark.

Officers said they knocked on the door, but got no response, and when they knocked the door down, someone shot at them from inside.

“If they knocked on the door and he's asleep how is he going to hear? Anybody can come and say you kick my door in, I’m protecting myself,” said Torrence.

One officer fired back, shooting Clark, who later died at the hospital. Police said the house and Clark were the target of a search warrant signed off on by a judge. The family has a different take.

“I know they got the wrong house. It is no question in my mind. I am willing to bet my last dollar on it. It is the wrong house,“ said Clark's son.

In the searches, police said they found drugs, firearms and ammunition.
