SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A man, 63, was fatally shot by police officers in south St. Louis Tuesday night.

The shooting happened in the 4000 block of California around 8:30 p.m.

Authorities said, following a six-month long investigation, three search warrants were issued for a block where there has been a problem with narcotics and guns. One warrant was issued for a home in the 4000 block of California.

According to police, the warrants at two of the houses was served without incident, but when they knocked on the door and announced “police” at the third house they did not receive an answer. Officers then used a battering ram to open the door, and a flash bang device.

The 63-year-old man inside the house fired two shots at the officers, police said. An officer then returned fire, hitting the suspect.

According to police, two firearms, a large quantity of ammunition and illegal drugs were found during the investigation.

The officer who fired the shots at the suspect was described by police as being a 40-year-old man with nearly 12 years of service. Per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The Force Investigative Unit is handling the ongoing investigation.
