NORTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

Less than 24 hours after touching down in St. Louis, a teenager was fatally shot.

"He was trying to make a difference. He didn't want to be another statistic on the street even through it happened that way, that wasn't his plan," says Pastor Doug Hollis.

Hollis mentored John Frost.

"Great kid, awesome kid, loved basketball, loved any sports really," he says.

Hollis says for the last four months, Frost was in Texas with his grandfather.

"He wanted to make improvement. He saw so much going on in St. Louis. he didn't want to be here. He wanted to be somewhere where he can improve his life," says Hollis.

He returned to St. Louis Monday and was shot and killed near north Kingshighway and Terry Avenue later that night.

"Just to be in town not even 24 hours, to lose your son your grandson, your nephew, it's a hurt feeling and we are just praying with the family," says Hollis.

Hollis is in contact with Frost's family. He says they are beside themselves with grief. As police continue to investigate, Hollis has a message for those who choose violence as the answer.

"'Put the down the guns. You can solve  problems better then shooting killing each other."
