BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

St. Clair County voters are being asked to decide on two sales tax hikes that could propel the county to one of the highest sales tax rates in the country.

A pair of one cent sales tax hikes are facing voters on April 4.

One would benefit school district in the county and the other would be for public safety, being split among many agencies including the Sheriff, the courthouse and the jail.

The sales tax hikes would only apply to discretionary purchases, meaning they would exclude groceries and medications.

If approved, the sales tax rate in St. Clair County is estimated to rise to around 10 percent, bringing it near Chicago's sales tax rate, which is regarded as among the highest in the U.S.
