Stolen macaw reunited with owner after being missing six months

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Stolen by burglars and stuffed into a pillowcase during a home break-in last summer, Sunshine probably has quite the story to tell, but even for a parrot, she’s not much of a talker.

Six months ago, Sunshine, the beloved blue and gold macaw, was stolen out of her cage during a home break-in.

Since she was taken, her owner Amber Hamant says she was lost without the bird she considers family.

"I was just broken inside completely," said Hamant.

The thieves sold Sunshine, but the person who bought her had no idea she had been stolen.

Her owner never stopped searching.

And now they’ve been reunited.

With the help of her friends, the Phoenix Police Department and even complete strangers, Hamant was able to track the bird down.

“We have such a deficit of police officers. For a detective to take that extra step and to really follow up and to stay in contact with me, it really is heartwarming."

Sunshine had been in the Valley the whole time.

"It is so amazing to have her back,” said Hamant. "I just really thought it was amazing how much the public helped, "

Sunshine’s wings had been clipped and her tail feathers are damaged, but those are only superficial injuries. Overall, Sunshine is doing well, considering what she went through.

Hamant and her bird are now inseparable, and they have a lot of catching up to do.

"Such a miracle that she's really back," said Hamant.

The thieves who took Sunshine have not yet been caught.
